And my drain plug also doesn't have a washer. Inch off a hex key, gaffer and ring spanner -every time. Recently added a metal hook to cut-down plastic drain bottle, that clips over the exhaust pipe...now oil changes are less messy. I know it has a magnet, but do you believe the weight of that drain ...

Crackin day out

Spent the weekend staying at a favourite B&B in Wiltshire, to visit at RAF Fairford for the Royal International Air Tatto...a really spectacular day. And no, I didn't come away with a sore patch of colour :) If I had got the bike finished (still swapping gearbox seals and bearings) I would have ...

'Trick parts going in' -sounds like a good plan...as there's not much left of that one! I admire your attitude to mechanical failures; and its always good to hear how you are progressing. Keep up the good work helping keep the ability of the boxer series in front of the horsepower obsessesed hordes.

Good idea Gus - will do that. I will borrow a puller from a mate, and report back after the deed is done.
Thanks

Removing timing cover

Inspired by other 1100s riders accounts of repainting the engine front cover, I plan to refresh mine. It has already been removed twice by trusty mecahnic, once to be powder-coated -when it looked a treat; and since to cure a persistent oil weep from it, using some sort of RTV silicone goo. Now I wa...

Achey hands and hips have led me to consider the life of my S to be short, hence spend no more than basic maintenance...but I really like the idea of lighter steering whilst retaining the stability. I have a spare Telelever arm in the loft, and would opt for satin black. What sort of money for an ar...

Heavy breathing

Using the VS pattern, gives a massive increase in filter area that really changes the way the bike breathes. [img] IMG_0162 by John Morgan , on Flickr[/img] I was amazed at how small the original, and the K&N direct repla...

Nice job with the final drive...must have taken patience, but rewarding to know it should last longer for that. Sympathy over the corrosion - need to sort out my bike too, and your result shows it can be done at home. I see you have same hydraulic platform (mine is currently holding up the 1100s as ...

Oil specs

The key thing with picking oil is the grade (of protection) it provides. Our boxer engines are mainly oil-cooled and being simple don't really benefit in normal use from fully synthetic, nor does the viscosity matter that much. Decent oil with the right code letters (I think its SF or SG?) will do. ...

Unsure about calipers

1100 S's were fitted with three different calipers at the front. It makes a big difference to how you go about overhauling - see James Sherlock, Motorworks, MotoBins websites for parts. Early bikes had Brembo opposed 4-piston calipers, which look sort of triangular from the road side. These are full...

Normal service resumed

Well well, it was after all the head-scratching the Lambda sensor. Thanks to the many Trixters who offered ideas and experiences; once I'd tested everything else, £30 spent at a 'breaker sorted it. Immediately the idle (which has been lumpy, swinging mostly upwards and unstable), part-throttle runni...

-update-

Just done a major service, and for the first time used fully synthetic Comma gear oil (GL5) in the gearbox...cost £9 more than the Comma semi-synth oil I have been using. Oh boy, what a difference! Up-changes are much smoother, and Down shifts are like having a new box (steady boys!) fitted -the tra...
