I did try the wiggle test but it was the actual switch that was causing the problem.

All fixed. Turns out to have been the ignition switch. Although it did confuse the mechanic as he said when he put his volt meter thingey across it it showed it was OK but obviously wasn't. He put a new switch in and replaced part of the surrounding loom. Thanks for your advice, excellent as ever.

I've checked the voltage coming off the battery and it's 12.39v. No relays click or fuel pump primes when switched on. The small circlip that holds the side stand switch onto the side stand pivot had come off but the switch and washer hadn't, but were just loose. I've removed it all and put it back ...
