Re: 1100S Intermittent Engine Rattle

I think the heads will need to come off for stud removal. Heat and pentrating oil aren't touching them, and the bits I can get a grip of keep breaking off. I tried drilling one, using the exhaust and a bush to get the drill in the right place, but I'm not happy with it, so it'll have to be heads off.

Re: 1100S Intermittent Engine Rattle

Hello again! I hope I might have found it! There's a restrictor in the balance pipe of the exhaust, like a core plug with an 8-10mm hole in it. It must have been floating around, because there's no clean face where it could have been mounted, but it was wedged in at 45° to the pipe. Does anyone know...

Re: 1100S Intermittent Engine Rattle

At the moment, I don't think it's the engine, I'm sure that noise would have transmitted itself to the casings if so. Bracket 23 is present and correct. The Y piece has a bar and a rubber at each end - it is possible that the bar was contacting the frame at its left hand side, it would probably have...

Re: 1100S Intermittent Engine Rattle

Well, the plot thickens. The chain guides and tensioners seem to be present, both sides. I've had the right hand rockers off, it doesn't look too bad, though there is a little wear on the rocker shafts, where the pushrod loads the rocker against the shaft. The pushrods are firmly together. When I tu...

Re: 1100S Intermittent Engine Rattle

the fact that its still running something like would suggest the chain is in one piece but flailing around and rattling against the internal castings. The main danger if it keeps on running is debris in the engine. Best course of action may be to investigate if a tensioner has failed and hope its j...

Re: 1100S Intermittent Engine Rattle

Well as another pissibollity, it sounded more of a tinny noise than the cam chain. If you find it is not the cam chains and you still have the cat in the exhaust system, it may be the internals loose - or springs holding aftermarket exhaust pipes. No cat, and no springs on the exhaust either, damn ...

Re: 1100S Intermittent Engine Rattle

I think you're right, it could be timing chain related.

I can't find my feeler gauge, (just moved house) but all 4 valve clearances are similar, and the springs look OK.

Turning the engine by hand, a little in each direction, I get a good bit of droop in the top run of the chain.

Try this, maybe not so intermittent after all.

1100S Intermittent Engine Rattle

Hello chaps, I've got a problem that's just appeared on my bike. I left home on the Isle of Wight yesterday, and rode towards the ferry. After about 5 or 6 miles of gentle riding (nothing over 50mph, 2-3krpm) I suddenly got a very nasty metallic rattle from the previously sweet engine. I stopped to ...

Re: R1100S Discs

Was it really in October I asked about this??? Time flies with new jobs, housing projects and the like. I'd been using my other bike for a bit, and finally got round to changing the front wheel bearing on Good Friday. I can't report back on any change, however, as like an idiot I went up the road, b...

R1100S Discs

Hello Chaps, I've not been here for a few months, but have been out enjoying the bike. Recently I noticed a wheel speed vibration while using the front brake, and have since replaced the front discs, as I suspected a warped disc. All the bobbins look good, and are a good but not rigid fit. I did not...

My R1100S will start quite happily on the side stand. If I put it in gear with the side stand down it stops. My 1995 R1100RS will not start or run with the side stand down. It took me a while to fathom that halfway home from collecting the RS, I stopped for a cuppa, and the bike wouldn't restart. Of...

Well, it's about time I updated you on things. I finally got through the test a few weeks ago, when at short notice an examiner visited the Island. Since then I've done about 500 miles on the 1100S. I've also been to Devon to collect an R1100RS which is doing the mainland commute. My longest ride by...

Well, there's only one test left between me and the road now! :D It turned out that while I was saving up for another test my instructor moved off the island, so I've had the opportunity to try a couple of different bikes. This time a Suzuki Gladius and a Honda CB600F. In my opinion, both preferable...

Hello again chaps, Sorry for the long break, it's been a busy few weeks, with a new job involving much more time, a hovercraft and bicycle commute, and all the other dross getting in the way. I also failed my mod 1 again, so hopefully I'll get it right next time. I went to see the bike today, ran it...
