I've had two fail on mine in 15 or is it 16 years... one like you describe , the other fractured completely while riding the bike , successful repair would be quite difficult I think.

I don't have a 1200s but found this thread , it seems to imply that if changing the fluid without introducing air to the system it can done without special tools . If air has been introduced to the system you need special tools eg GS 911 to pulse the system via the abs module because air bubbles can...
