Re: Rough running R12S
Just covering off on the little things, which a good mechanic should have too ... Check your throttle cable rubber shroud is properly located at the throttle and not come off, also that you have some throttle cable play as specified. I developed similar erratic and high idle to find the shroud had s...

Re: Swing arm bush/bearing replacement
This YouTube video is a good demonstration of the process of swing arm removal & replacement on a R1200 https://youtu.be/BsS8y6YlbkM and this one fills the gap of bearing replacement https://youtu.be/CRfdTuQ65GE .

Re: Clutch Slave cylinder
What bike ... R12S or R11S ? If the latter, seems there is a rebuild kit out there if you can be bothered https://www.beemerboneyard.com/21522335061rk.html.

Re: Clutch Slave cylinder
Agree! This little note at Beemer Boneyard (for the master cyclinder rebuild kits) might account for it https://www.beemerboneyard.com/mamacykifr3.html . Also this listing for the slave cylinder at Motorworks BMW, notes BMW do not list a repair kit https://www.motorworks.co.uk/vlive/Shop/Parts.php?T...

Re: Holey brake pistons and bobbins
‘Rusted holes’? Or just some surface pitting? If there were holes I would expect fluid to be leaking out. If it’s just some mild surface pitting you might be able to clean & polish them up ... really depends on the severity of what you’re describing. Photo would help! Otherwise +1 with Humbug on...

Pete, what year is your ST? Is there a part number evident? Any marks, dents etc? Cheers!

Re: Rear drive unit meltdown!
Can’t comment about early models, ie. airheads. But as a generalisation, mainly Oilhead/hexhead’s. Although quite robust, the FD is a fairly stressed component that needs to be closely monitored for early signs of higher service needs. Maintaining scheduled oil changes, correct oil spec, monitoring ...

Thanks for sharing! What oil specifically, had you run in it to-date & what was the service regime/history to-date.

Re: R1200S Paddock Stand
I initially got front & rear paddock stands for my R12S, BUT after acquiring the Becker-Technik Service Lifter I wouldn’t be without it and probably never bothered with the paddock stands had I found it first. See http://shop.becker-technik.de/en/motorbike-lifters/20-bmw-r1200s-lifter.html

Re: Rough running R12S
Last suggestion: I ensure the primary stick coil/plug & oriface is spotlessly clean (CRC Electrical spray & dry) and also provide a complete light coating of dielectric grease to inhibit any ingress of moisture or contaminants. It is a highly stressed area (electrically), so it all helps rel...

Re: Rough running R12S
If you’re satisfied the valve clearances are spot on (recently checked), ensure there is no prospect for any air leaks ... especially the rubber caps over the TBS ports which can crack with time & not always obvious. Could benefit from a recalibration of the idle actuators if you have access to ...

This one has been on Gumtree in Aus since last year. The market over here is so skinny for these bikes, it may never sell. Re: Whassat?
I suspect it’s a float to keep the vent above the fuel level ... bit like a snorkel, otherwise the fuel could drain/siphon out.
