The hard nylon BMW cyclinder head protectors are okay if the bike simply falls onto its side. I dropped my bike at slow speed and the plastic sheared from the metal where bolted to the cylinder head. The protector did its job but was scrap afterwards. Try the Touratech alloy protectors from the GS r...

After a few months use, I found fault with the in-sole of a pair of Daytona boots. I took them back to the retailer with my receipt, and the dealer posted them to Daytona. Repair was done and boots were returned to the dealer within a couple of weeks. No costs to me. I was able to use my old bike bo...

Zumo 550, sound.

I had considered the Autocom route to get sound from my Zumo 550 however a far cheaper option is to buy the Starcom headset speakers and Zumo connection lead (about £40), and to add a Boosteroo (£17 from Amazon) battery powered amplifier (it is about 5 inches long and sits neatly behind the Zumo cra...

Ask to see the evidence / photo, and make a big fuss that they got it wrong. If it is an entirely different vehicle especially a car rather than a bike so much the better. Write to the Chief Constable, your local MP, MCN, local press or whoever you think might run with the story. worth the price of ...

BMW replaced the rear shock on my R1200ST under warranty @ 12k. If I had been asked to pay, the dealer said BMW would have charged £500. At those sort of prices I would have bought Ohlins and also replaced the front shock as well. Now wondering if it worth taking out a third party extended warranty ...

Most ferries have plenty of ratchet tie downs however depending on the number of bikes on board these can be in short supply. I usually take two of my own with me. Depending on the ferry the crew will guide you to a parking place which will generally have wires welded to the deck onto which you fix ...

There is new Tesco with petrol station in Wick next to the airport. This means fuel prices (at least in Wick) are on a par with Inverness. Not too many petrol stations along the north Caithness / Sutherland coast so fill up in Thurso and you should get to Ullapool on a tank. Suggest you do not leave...

There are generally plenty of used Garmin GPS on e-bay or for sale in the UKGSer website as a lot of people do seem to like the latest toys and constantly upgrade. Streetpilot III was superseded about 4/5 years ago by the Garmin 26XX series, then the 27XX series was released and the current variant ...

Keep an eye on e-bay. I acquired my last pair of Daytona boots there for £60. Looked like they hadn't been worn more than a couple of times; bargain.

Had a pair of Sidi Black Rain. Ok for the first year then the Lorica outer material started to take on the appearance of crazy paving and the boots leaked in heavy rain. Replaced with Daytona Non Stop, leather / Goretex, 3 years, 45K+ miles, worn summer & winter through some horrible wet weather...

A few years ago top of the line Garmin GPS like StreetpilotIII or 26XX were retailing @ about £1,000 however as redundant models I have seen them for sale for £150-200. Plenty of these around used although deals on these as 'new' units seemed to have ended as stocks ran out. The latest Garmin models...

You can lower the seat on the R1100S by 1/2" quite easily. There are two frame mounted spigots with rubber bungs that the front of the seat rests on. You can use a Stanley knife to cut some of the rubber away. This lowers the front of the seat. If you only cut one side of each bung you can alwa...

Shoei with Pinlock or BMW System 5 with double glazed insert are a sure fire way to beat misting. Been riding all winter and no visor misting at all with eithe rof the above. Fitting the anti fog insert is a simple case of clipping it onto two wee pegs on the inside of the visor. A cheaper options i...
