Daytona NonStop Goretex boots, 50,000 miles, no leaks. Says it all. Just bought another pair of Daytonas to replace them as the sole on my first pair was somewhat worn. I managed to found a slightly used pair on e-bay for £65 rather than the £200 retail price. I had tried Altberg boots. Excellent qu...

I have been using a Widder heated body warmer for about four years. Great bit of kit as it has enabled me to keep riding through Scottish winters and also to make early season trips to the Alps when there were still feet of snow by the roadside. The Widder jacket can be supplied with a plug to fit s...

A small block of wood (about an inch high) under the side stand levels the bike up enough to check the oil; hold onto the left hand bar just in case she topples. The sight glass is 1/2 litre from bottom to top and even when just below the min mark there will still be 3 litres+ of oil. Unless you hab...

My S leaks oil from the bottom of the gaitor @ the rear box and has done so periodically for 40k of its 62k miles. Nothing too serious; just enough to make the rear wheel messy like a chain drive bike. Tends to be worse if I have not ridden the bike for a while e.g. a month. Presumably whatever oil ...

I have been using Streetpilot 3 for a few years now. You cannot download speed cameras. Once you get used to GPS it is a great tool especially if you tour abroad or travel to new parts of the UK. Far easier then trying to follow a map on the tankbag or written direction notes. For the price the GPS ...

Why don't you try the R1200ST instead of the RT. ST is closer in weight to the 1100S, bigger fuel tank gives >200 mile range and the fairing provides decent weather protection. The ST feels slightly front heavy and is not as flickable as my S however as a long distance tourer it is better than the S...

I have spilt petrol a couple of times onto the plastic around the indicators. Even washing it off immediately did not seem to reduce the marking effect on the plastic. I have found wiping the black plastics with a cloth / small drop of clean engine oil leaves a shiny surface which masks any white pe...

The standard BMW panniers are not that wide. If the mirrors fit the gap the panniers usually follow. That was my logic until I tried filtering in Europe and clipped a car in Italy and a lorry trailer (one of the sticky-out red light arms on the side of the trailer). Now a wee bit more careful of the...

Beautiful dry & bracing day here in Soctland. 6 degrees, roads covered in salt and a cold north wind. Still, good to be out on the bike even if I resembled the Michelin man with all my layers of clothes.

They all do that sir. Seriously, my S needs a firm gentle but press on the lever to engage first when first starting up. Wonderful things BMW gearboxes.

Final thoughts, you could try the UKGS'er website. They seem to have quite an active For Sale board and I have seen Baglux bags listed. Another option if to buy an Ortleib dry sack from Tiso or similar outdoor shop. Various sizes from 20 litres upwards. Good for bulky items and can be bungeed the re...

I have used a Baglux tank bag on my S for 5 years. I think it it the 12/15 litre Shibuya model with small front pocket; fine for day trip use and also for stuff you want close at hand whilst on tour. I am not a fan of large tank bags and feel that anything much larger (e.g. 30 litre baglux Alpha bag...

If you love your S, you'll clean it. It only takes 10 minutes with a hose and bucket to get rid of the salt so I tend to wash & dry my bike before putting it into the garage. After 6 years / 60k I have yet to see a rust spot.

Try SportTouring for Cee Bailey's. I think they are UK based & advertise on the UKGs'er's website. Screen for R1100S is £100 for clear; £108 for tints. Appears to be various screen height options.

Not cheap but at least a known price as they will have sorted out Customs.

Brother-in-law took his Tiger out for a final ride having just advertised it for sale. Binned it on a slow bend and wrote the bike off. Actually got more £ from the insurance company than the price he had advertised for sale.
