Re: R1100S - Intermitent Neutral Light

You can certainy get the neutral light switch off the retainer because I just tried it. Will be major PITA to get it back on but it's definitely doable.

Re: Gearbox stopped selecting

Thanks, I was also quite pleased at not having to buy a gearbox :D One thing I noticed whilst working on it - this bike I got at 39k miles was fitted with a recon gearbox from motorworks. It's not on 103k miles so I've done 64k on it, all hard miles in heavy town rush-hour traffic stop-starts, traff...

Re: Gearbox required

Thanks Dave I did look at those and nearly bought the £300 one from Sherlock but the 'free next day, get it by friday' option magically turned into 'free 3 day get it by monday' when I went to pay. I held off buying that because I figured I had the weekend to pull mine apart and see if it was repair...

Re: Gearbox stopped selecting

So basically the gears had stopped selecting because - the selector had broke! These two parts had obviously been resistance welded but they had parted at the weld. selector broke.jpg So I gave them a quick file test to check the hardness. Not hardened at all so no problem welding them. Out with the...

Re: Gearbox stopped selecting

Well, it would be if I paid attention :D I was obviously quite flustered when I broke down and then had to walk the last mile to work in full motorcycle gear so I was thoroughly cooked by the time I got there. Anyway, I picked the bike up today and had another look at the gear lever. It's wasn't act...

Re: Gearbox stopped selecting

I've found this schematic in a manual online. I think that the spring no6 has failed or come out. Capture.PNG The spring (6) pushes the guide plate (3) forward so the hooks catch on the pins of the shift drum. Since the centering spring (1) is clearly working I can only assume that the guide plate (...

Gearbox stopped selecting

Riding in to work this morning I pulled up at some lights, when they went green I pulled away, went for second gear, found neutral and then could not shift up nor down. At first I thought the lever had come loose on the gearbox spigot but that's all tight. I have spring pressure on the lever both up...

Gearbox required

I urgently need a replacement gearbox for my 2004 R1000S. Before I go and buy a used one from motorworks I thought I'd try here see if anyone has one for immediate sale.

Good working condition is a must as I use my bike for work.

Mine has stopped selecting gears.

Re: 190/50/17 on a 5.5 inch rim....Certain death??

Regulations have tightened right up in recent years, and none in the insurer's favour. They would literally have to prove that a loss was a direct result of fitting the wrong size tyre to the bike to have any chance of recovery. How are they ever going to ascertain that? BTW your example is not of a...

Re: 190/50/17 on a 5.5 inch rim....Certain death??

Insurance are not allowed to deny a 3rd party claim based on vehicle condition it's specified in the Road Traffic Act. You won't tear a hole in time and space fitting a 190 to a 5.5" rim but you might not like the way it turns. Certainly if I was on a budget and I had one spare I'd be fitting it.

Re: Battery, voltage regulator or...?

I had very similar symptoms and bought a new battery. When I removed the battery I found the electrolyte was low on all cells. Filled it up with distilled water, charged it up and it was good as gold.

Still kept the new battery though, this one is now just a spare.

Re: Rear brake light problem

It'll be the switch. I always thought that the ABS bikes all had a NC brake light switch. I found this out when my brake light switch failed and I tried to fit the one that came off my old ABS model. The light was on until I pressed the pedal then it went off. Further investigation showed that the n...

Re: Another 1100 Gearbox Question

No, I'm in Kent UK. I've looked online and seen a pic of a 2nd gear and it looks like a regular dog. Re-grinding these is a simple matter than anyone with access to a lathe and basic tools can achieve. I think I ground my first ever one using a mitre saw.

Re: Another 1100 Gearbox Question

Wat form do the 2nd gear dogs take? Are they stub v stub or stub in pocket? I have re-ground several gearbox gear dogs for motorcycles but never one for a BMW.

Re: R1100s Gearbox question

Afternoon all Just changed the gearbox oil on the bike. Fabricated my own drain plug removal tool and drained what looked like milky soup from the gearbox. Bike has done 47.5k miles and other than a tricky ‘1st from neutral’ selection the gearbox works fine. Perhaps more worryingly there was a lot(...
