From what I've been told by a very good authority get one from a BMW dealer with the extended warranty

I don't believe so Jonny, all the K12 peeps have said there fantastic BUT there have been problems, the warranty could be worth its weight in gold :!:

The BMW warranty covers EVERTHING, no quibble is my understanding, I'm right in thinking a mates K12 R Sport has had 2 clutches (or maybe gearbox) at a 1K each. Do s search for Steve Parry K12gt

Johnny5 - the 1200S is an old model now. It ran from 2004 to 2007 when it became the K1300s. I had a 1200S and it was a fantastic bike. But, you only had to look at the 1300S to see what was improved. The clutch on the 1200S was heavy as hell and a bugger in towns. The fuelling was iffy at low revs unless you had a power commander or other type device.

Not sure what your budget is but there are plenty of 1300s around at good money these days.

However, as others have said the bikes are dear when big stuff fails like ESA shocks so an extended warranty or very cheap price and good luck are pre-requisites.

Steve Parry is riding a K1200GT that has been re-built gradually over the years judging by his posts :D

triggers broom :)

thing is I'm getting some pennies soon and cannot find anything that sparks my interest to replace the KGT except maybe a K13GT. An RT interests but is way slower, a GTR Kawasaki felt slow and dull when I rode one, Pan 13's are heavy gutless things. The FJR13 maybe but I've been told they're a bit top heavy, the Trophy is a right bloater as is the K16GT ... at the mo' the 13GT and 12RT are looking like the only contenders.

Do NOT run one without the extended warranty, there's lots of expensive bits that make the 30 odd quid a month worthwhile

You can put it on cover here

If it helps any Johnny we have two K1300S's in stock at the moment :D

I had a K1200r and although i loved it there were loads of problems in 1 1/2 years of ownership.
ABS went funny occasionally, with it being servo assist when it went off you had 10% brakes maximum- scary to say the least.
A coil broke down, and although it isn't an expensive part you have to remove the rad and drain the coolant to change it, and the park plugs for that matter. So servicing is a ball ache.
Rear shaft oil seal went. fortunately i managed to build a tool to remove the old one. but the final drive oil must be the most expensive on the plat.
And finally the gear box gave up after 12,000 miles ( a very common fault at this mileage) due to a design fault- the throw into 5th and 6th gears isn't enough so the gears don't mesh properly and then kick against the forks wearing and bending them.
BMW knew about this as they fitted K1300 gear boxes to warranty bikes. however you need the 1300 clutch as well as they're different fitments. so about £2K job.
on a positive note due to the design it's only a couple of hours job to replace it.
I have been seriously contemplating another K, but the 13. only downsides to this that i can see are that you have to have jap style indicators, and theres too much in the way of electroniics top go wrong
