A day at the races

Postby GRAgusta » Sun Sep 02, 2012 5:45 pm

Jenny and I popped over to Brno to give a shout for Cal.

Apparently he didn't need our support, he'd brought his own....

Image

2300 miles from Aberdeen to Brno and back, I am really proud of Jenny's achievment.

I have loads of photos to sort through, will be back soon.

We took the ferrry from Newcastle over to Netherlands and blasted into the Black Forrest day 1. I had booked into a 15th century castle, but hadn't understood which one until we got there......

This was the castle that lead Guy Gibson to the dam ......

We travelled to Dresden (the ferry over the Elbe above) and then on to Prague.

After two and a half days exploring Prague we took a long slow route to Brno through the country.

Our hotel in Brno was also base for Ducati and Dorna, gets you in the spirit when everyone at breakfast is logoed for moto GP.

Time to head home

Postby GRAgusta » Tue Sep 04, 2012 7:33 pm

We took the fast route from Brno north west, there are lots of signs to Praha, but when you get there no signs to anywhere else. We crossed one bridge four times..... moral ... check your GPS has maps for every country on the itinery...

The GPS worked in (East) Germany. Meisen was easy to find. Loved the porceline factory (Jenny shopped) and what a pretty place.

Sadly Jenny dropped her bike next day , a slow accident but her left mirror came off. Moto Team Yamaha in Leipzig sorted us out. They took a mirror off a show room bike and fitted it to Jenny's bike two hours later. Star men at Moto Team Leipzig.

Then back to Black Forrest for a gorgeous hotel with sauna and pool to chill out after a hot stressful day

Next stop was Arnheim, the museums to the battle are very interesting, and very moving. Well worthe a visit.

Image

Then home to blighty....

Image

A great adventure completed, met lovely people, saw great scenery, a lot of history, the racing .... all good.

Best thing is Jenny is very proud of her achievement .... first big run :D and is up for more. So big shout to her for indulging me.

Almost as many helmets as me................

But - be honest.............

Which one of you draws the short straw - and gets to use the soft panniers? I know they are on the Diversion, but I have a sneaking suspicion that it ain't Jenny's gear that is in them............

Come on - fess up

Packing

Postby GRAgusta » Tue Sep 04, 2012 8:12 pm

Al

I have to confess we both took stuff that we didn't use. But it was hot all the way, so it was cold weather stuff that didn't get used.

But I had at my disposal one hard box and one soft bag; Jenny had a hard box and a soft bag. The meissen porceline came home in a hard box.

I took yet another divot out of one hard box squeezing past a truck in Czech Republik, and one of the soft bags got abraded when the Yamaha went over.

All in all Total equality. :D

Good report and well done Jenny!! Which route did you take to Leipzig? I came back through Leipzig from Chemnitz and going through one village was where an old race track was - the pits were still on the side of the road

I have thought of going to Brno, great pictures - now I am more likely to follow your trail -well done both.

Having visited a couple of foreign MotoGPs I am now more interested in the close racing of WSBK, and the chance to get a bit closer to the action.

Thanks guys for bringing this post back to mind. I so enjoyed this trip, we've previously toured France, Netherlands, Spain, Italy with lots of happy memories. But this journey took us to places where we were much more stretched - navigating, reading sign posts, the heat, the distance from home. It all added to the excitement and sense of achievement.

And of course it was Jenny's first time riding her own bike on the right (wrong) side of the road.

For her it has planted the seed to go again, but she has discovered limitations in her Yamaha - areas that could improve. Understandable really the Diversion is a GOOD bike to begin on, but it is not the finished article for her.

Our big holidays this year will be scuba diving, but we will be biking down to Silverstone in September, by which time Jenny may have followed Adrea Dovisioso's path 8) .

Next year we will look at Mugello or Misano, and Venice.

Misano is a toilet.... stay clear... Mugello is cool as the area is good, lots to see. Venice is like Disney land... sorry if I sound grumpy.... I live here so kind of know what to avoid. if you want off the beaten tourist path then the Reggio Emilia area has a lot to offer, cheaper than Tuscany, but just a beautiful. head into the mountains on the Cerreto and Radici pass and enjoy..

Great photos and seems like a great trip as well.
Your good lady's Yammie looks considerably bigger than the R11s or is it just a trick of the eye. I ask as it surprised me as the R11 can't be called small.
