Tuesday 12 October 9.30am four of us (ninga 650 1200gs r1100s r1200s) set of to Mudgee a large country town. We headed out of the suburbs of Newcastle and weaved around the backroads of the Hunter Valley vineyards to reach the Putty/Golden Hwy turned left a short distance then turned right onto the Golden Hwy travelling through the upper Hunters rich farmland to our lunch stop at Jerrys Plains. A splash of fuel (4L only had 95octane) and a cold beer and lunch at the Tavern.
After lunch travelled some back roads through farmlands until we reached the Bylong valley way turned left and headed towards Bylong. Not much traffic and a few twisty bits here and there, just before Bylong turn right onto Wollar road no traffic and some elevation changes until we turned left onto Ulan road traffic got a bit heavier as we came back into civilisation. This took us to mudgee and to the Woolpack Hotel our home for a couple of nights.
Wednesday after breakfast headed to Hill end on hillend road this heads up into the hills and is narrow and twisty. We looked around Hill end and had some lunch. Hill end was a goldrush town famous for the unearthing of the largest gold nugget ever found 268kgs where they extracted 86kg of pure gold. After lunch we headed of to Sofala and this part of Hill end road drops down the hills and was pretty twisty, hitting Sofala we turned right onto Ilford Sofala road which meets the Castlereagh Hwy turned left back to Mudgee. Dodged a Wombat on the way back and it turned out to be a boring but scenic ride.
Back at Mudgee another pub crawl (there's 3 pubs close to our's) and a steak dinner. Next morning after breakfast we headed for home the same way but had lunch at Broke and cut through Cessnock which was a bit quicker, all up 868kms and incident free and a good time had by all Dobbo.

Thanks for posting the ride report. Speaking from a storm Babet ravaged Eastern Scotland that looks idyllic!

All the best
