Had a quick check, but motorworks gave it a full service and MOT before it went up for sale.

Only one thing I've found to be not right about it. The petrol cap is worn out and won't come off! (Doh!) seems common enough that there's lots of fixes- I'll have a chat with Motorworks and see what they can do, but it may be better long term and less hastle to do this fix myself-

Oh and apparently the Lufthansa special was a Germany only model, which may explain the fork reflectors.

Mine won't "unlock" and lift out, but I just unscrew the whole barrel. I replaced the sealing washer and have been using it like that for 10k miles.

I'll check out your link though. Cheers.

Edit: I guess mine must have been pinned by a past owner? I can unscrew it fine. Mine unscrews at the large rounded thread, seen on your attached link.

Might pay me to check quality of job. Would be a trifle inconvenient if something went ping when I'm miles from home.

Think I'm going to just drill and screw the inner barrel to the outer.

A fine piece of machinery. I notice the brakes are an earlier version than mine, which explains your comment on them. Mine are later brembos and work pretty good (for the period).

I think they're the ATE brakes and they don't have a good reputation for performance :)

Just checked your front wheel Steve, looks like it's had the warranty replacement done (phew) :)

Good catch Steve. I would have never known that!

I've sorted the petrol cap and got it taxed etc and it been pi@@in it down here all day! had to charge the battery too as I emptied it trying to use the choke (I really cant figure it out...) to start it cold. Batt looks a bit old so i'll replace it, but it's on charge tonight.

bike seems to start better with no choke and just a bit of throttle. choke (full or half) + throttle stalls it....

I've binned the choke lever/cable. Just put me gloves over the pod filters if I think it needs it. Simples.

Re battery. If yours is the big one like mine, I sourced it at half the price of motorworks. Exact same battery.

looks good. If I remember correctly, with my old R65, it was a case of turn the choke lever and press the starter without any throttle. I must admit it was a pig to get used to

Looking very nice. They can be finicky to start some like full choke a little throttle some none. I set up my R80 and it was completely different than before, I believe a trial and error regime is needed until you "grasp the magic".
Some have upgraded the front brakes with a handlebar reservoir conversion which apparently improves things. There are some knowledgeable people on here

Congratulations.

I'd been eyeing that one up, too. Lovely old thing.

Thanks for the link. I've used that forum many times, there's a few people on there that have unbelievable knowledge of BMWs and are always happy to share.

Took it out for a 50 mile ride this morning, the brakes are ok, they just don't have any initial bite, but do work. It keeps catching me out though, its faster than I give it credit for and 50 comes up quickly.

Gave it a good wash and removed what looked like 10 years of crap, diagnosed a random wire hanging from under the tank (right horn +), fixed the right horn :D , and cleaned/polished the timing cover. :)

Also found a nice Newtronic electronic ignition system under the timing cover, going to email them for the instructions to see what's what with it.

Next job is to find some mirrors that fit (for less than the £40 motorworks want) and find out why the tacho seems to be reading double the revs (I think....).

It started better this morning, but there's no chance of it ticking over cold, choke or no choke. A bit of throttle gets one cylinder going for a couple of seconds, then the other fires. After that it needs the throttle holding open a bit until you get going.

In the way that kids look forward to Xmas, I'd also been eyeing that bike up...no intention of buying but thought it looked pretty in airline paint, and of course lighter than the 11S.

Pleased for you

Had a good evening fiddling with carbs and now the bike starts cold and ticks over with just a tiny bit of choke. the carbs are very gummed up on the outside, so I've got some gaskets coming and I'll give them a service.

had a look under the tank and sanded all the electrical connectors I could find, which seems to have sorted the rev counter. :)the front brake master cylinder looks a bit iffy, but its not leaking.

Then had an hour or so with a rag and Autosol, which I think is very relaxing. -

Is it me, or does the top of the carb cap look exactly right for a bottle cap? ;)
