My first boxerbanter....the dreaded R11S exhaust removal

Postby bfisher » Mon Apr 11, 2016 10:18 pm

Or should i say rant... Not the first on this topic but never the less after having spent last couple of hours (on top of a few more) removing backend of the exhaust system (de-cat) in order to enable me to replace my rear shock... You can't even get an allen key to fit the f'ing y-joint at the back.. took me about 45mins of quarter turns via allen key that i had to leverage using a trowel (yes a trowel) that happened to have a hold in its handle to enable me to turn the allen key.. Additionally i had to dremo two of the bolts as the allen key initially rounded due to not being able to get a decent angle.. And to make matters worse, the top bolt you can't even get a flat angle to cut the flipping bolt off!!!!

On the positive, its all off now.. lambda still connected, but most likely remove via connection as opposed to cursing when i attempt to take it off the pipe.. Well at least now its off i can clean it.. the question now is am i prepare to take a chance @ removing the header pipes too... think i will leave that until next winter as at this rate i'll be lucky to get the bike back together for summer!!

Just to add a bit more cash being thrown @ bike, no i'll need some new gaskets @ £8 a pop! Joys of rebuilding / cleaning up the bike...

Was gonna say the same - I'm sure I removed / refitted a rear shock a while back without having to touch the exhaust, although that was a standard exhaust & shock.

This probably doesn't help though.......

From recollection the Y piece deffo has come off (if a Laser) to allow the long bottom shock bolt to come out.

It depends what Y-piece you have. I've got a Laser and a Remus one. I can't remember which but one gives you space to remove the shock and the other doesn't.

I had a Remus link pipe on mine and don't recall any major strife. I took it all off a few times. Lazer cans if it makes any difference.

Shock comes off easily ( was mentioned on here many times and I've used this method too) when you remove the top bolt first allowing the swingarm to drop down away from the pipework... or maybe you raise it , I can't remember

Hadn't considered that (dropping the swing arm I mean with the shock still attached)? Could work.

Just fitted a wilbers rear shock to mine tonight
And there was no way to get the bottom bolt out without hitting the y piece. But just undid the 4 bolts at the bootie, and the top exhaust clamp and I was able to manoeuvre the y piece enough to get the bottom bolt out. Total time from start to finish was about 45 mins.
