Yamaha Super Tenere 750

Postby Davey Bee » Mon Aug 04, 2014 8:39 pm

I fancy one of these, as it looks like a good all round bike for, city, national touring and winter. I know that they are long in the tooth (but so am I). Trouble is I don't really know a lot about them. So any knowledgeable comments would be an help.

mate of mine had one, rated it highly but did say that the downpipes corrode like hell so make sure you find one with stainless ones. He also mentioned some laziness on when starting on one of the cylinders when they've stood a few days. Common issue apparently, but apart from that well liked, to the point that he was looking at another one recently.

It's strange that very little seems to be known about them, but the few that have experience, speak well of them. I'm beginning to believe, that maybe this was a good bike that got under the net, if that make sense.

I'd say that the fact a lot of people have used them to go round the world/across africa etc is a good pointer.

I remember they were well regarded by the press but I don't think we're huge sellers in the uk. Ugly and ungainly looking and some pretty shocking 90s paint schemes.

A friend of mine has just restored one, cost him an arm and both legs I think, finished in blue with the yamaha blocks and gold wheels. had a mare getting parts, especially decals, had to buy 3 kits to get all the right ones!! Knowing him he will soon get bored with it and it will soon be up for sale.

That's the type of bike I'd like, as long as it's not too precious! Like that colour combination as well. If he's up for selling it please let me know.

I have a 1990 XT600 Tenere and is used daily for the commute to work.

Take a look at the forum, which covers all XTs including the 750

Regards,
Russ
It started badly, it tailed off a little in the middle and the less said about the end the better, but apart from that it was excellent.

Thanks Russ, great site. Also usefull, as a bike I'm going to look at today, was advertised on there 12 months ago. By the same vendor it would appear. This means that he either, is fully soften up to a price reduction, the bike is crap or he has his head up his @rse. I went to look at one on Sunday, where the last 2 applied, so I'm hoping that lightening doesn't strike twice.

Well I can report that it's a nice bike, but a little over priced. The vendor is not yet fully softened up. But let's leave it a week and see.
