Exporting a Google Maps route

Postby Motocod » Tue May 19, 2015 9:35 am

Am I just being thick (!) or has Google Maps stopped allowing the option to save planned routes?

I've been messing about with some planned routes, with a view to uploading them to my Garmin, and for the life of me I can't see how to save or export routes anymore.

I've read elsewhere that Mapquest supports Garmin, so I may switch over to that.

I hate the new maps it's horrible you can still get to old maps temporarily at

https://www.google.com/lochp

assuming you've saved your route it can be opened there and it then opens in new maps and there's three dots next to Share there's an export to kml there as image below

or just download Tyre for Garmin. I use it for my TomTom and it works well
There would appear to be a surfeit of prolixity and sesquipedalian content today please do not use a big word when a singularly un-loquacious and diminutive linguistic expression will satisfactorily accomplish the contemporary necessity

Nice, thanks Steve.

Unfortunately it looks like I can't create a new map and access this functionality, so I'll have to look elsewhere. Seems weird that they would take away this feature.

After you have planned the route, click on the gear icon lower right of screen. Select 'share or embed map', a new window pops up, tick the box for short url and copy the link. That is all you need to export the map to something like TYRE or share it on email.

Hey Steve,

Is that an old route or one you are planning?

I was at the Kylesku Hotel for three nights last week on the GS, very good food but room 6 and 7 have the shower downstairs!

It was a poss route for this years trip, that's not being used this time but is on the cards for a future trip.

We used the hotel as a coffee stop last year and loved its location and the seafood on offer on the menu.

Looks like I might have to go back to the old-fashioned way of manually entering waypoints. I've downloaded Garmin Basecamp, which should make that process slightly easier/quicker.

I see the link Steve kindly posted up to the proper old Google Maps is now just taking us to the new version.

Rarely have I (in my limited knowledge of pooter stuff) known something so useable become so utterly, completely sh*te in one swoop. To say the new GM is unfit for purpose is being kind. I friggin' hate it.

Yep, excuse the French but it's fucking useless!!! I hate it with a vengeance. Even on a reasonably powerful new laptop it's slow and laggy next to the original version.

I'm off to try Bing maps as I think it's got a similar interface to original Google Maps

Worth a quick look here to check compatibility before you get started...

http://tourstart.org/faq/Garmin-gps-dev ... le-poi_167

I spent ages messing about with it, and it turns out my ancient old Nuvi 255W is not supported, which is a big pity! Maybe time for me to consider something newer.
