Value of 5.5" rear wheel?

Postby McBoxer » Sat Jul 16, 2016 5:41 pm

As I've recently sold my 11S I'm left with a few bits and bobs that I should really offer up to the Boxertrix massive. Mostly I'm ok with pricing, but I have a pair of wheels that inludes a wide (5.5") rear, and it's the value of that item that I'm struggling with.

I bought the wheels as a pair years ago, and when I got them they were freshly powder coated in black. They've been wrapped up and in storage ever since - never fitted to a bike.

Can anyone advise what they might be worth? I can't see any on ebay (of the wider variety) to gauge price but I know I can't list them on here without a price, so I'm a bit stumped.

Unfortunately I can't remember what I paid for them (it must have been 4 years ago) before you ask - and I think I bought them as a package with some other stuff so it probably wouldn't help if I could!

Any advice greatly appreciated....

McB

I bought one last year for £100, but it has a chunk chipped out of the rim so a repair and re-paint cost of £60 has to be added.

Used prices at Motorworks:
£275 for the rear & £195 for the front. Doesn't say if they've been refurbished or not - so I'm guessing not....

So I'm sitting on £470 worthy of wheels in my loft?

Hardly worth shop prices if you're selling privately. I would hazard that if they are in excellent condition they might be worth a couple of hundred together.

For the experienced, what benefits does the larger rear give you (naturally size does matter BUT can you actually notice the difference & when its it best applicable?

I paid £400 for a pair of 1200s wheels (the rear being the wider option) and they were in good condition (also came with rim tape!!!!)

Standard size 1100S wheels go for around £100 for a front and £130 or so for a rear. I'd imagine the wider rim would put a bit of a premium on that say between £150 and £175. Not sure how the powder coating may affect it. Someone may love it, some may prefer original.
