Pulse Jet Ignition

Postby dark_knight87 » Tue Jan 31, 2017 1:24 pm

This is not a new idea, Honda played around with this in their CVCC car engine in the 70's using a pre-compustion chamber but have not seen this on a motorcycle. This chap wanted to use an airhead boxer engine in a light aircraft and needed to get around the issue of cooling, played around with some ideas and came up with this: -

I am not associated to this in any way just thought it maybe of interest?

It started badly, it tailed off a little in the middle and the less said about the end the better, but apart from that it was excellent.

I did ask and it is £120, money back guarantee. It requires the ignition timing to be retarded to prevent mid range pre ignition.
It is currently not the right weather for me to ride, so I could not try this for some months yet.

Dark Knight

Interesting you mentioned Honda played with this in the 70's.
Millions of diesel engines are running with pre combustion chambers - not spark ignition though.
Something invented on old side-valve engines by Harry Ricardo in the 30's.

I think Harry Weslake did some work in the 50's on pre combustion petrol engines too leading to modern stratified charge engines.
Interesting slide show here from Mahle -
