Which year of R1100S is the best & why?

Postby bfisher » Wed Mar 29, 2017 9:23 pm

Does anyone have any opinions which year (model) (exception i guess i is the BCR but even that changed over time) would one consider to be the best?

I've never been able to come across a definitively listing of model changes over time, other than the obvious such as single migrating to twin spark, some models having 5.5", the SS (not sure it really had a lot more did it & how does it compare to the BCR) etc.

I think for sake of no arguments (we all know red goes fastest) we ignore the aesthetics for now. . .

A down-side for example is the fact the pre 99 (2000?) model had an ecu has a hard-wired chip (hence mod is not readily supported).

Thus if one was to recommend a year, which one would it be & why?

RWB 2004. Its obvious. The Mamola is squat, does not have the same presence. In this case the latter model will always be more desirable than the earlier types. Just check out the cheeky prices dealers are hoping to sell RWB ones.

The Mamola or British BCR never appealed to me just seemed like an r1100s with an inexpensive makeover. The RWB has a wow factor to look at and to sit upon. :)

I would like to hear from anyone who has paid or sold one for over £7k ??

but .... the BMW UK one and the single spark Mamola are the only ones that were "limited" numbers, the RWB was a standard production model.

They're all lovely Brad, even a standard R1100S, if you get a good one of any version you will love it!

@slparry (Steve), i've already bitten the R1100S bug... 99 (ex-boxertrix), i've cleaned it up a bit, still don't like the state of the engine paint but lets enjoy riding it before i tackle that... toying with idea also of a re-spray or updating paint work; toying with the idea of an engine re-build but one step at a time . . . . Note i already have most 3rd party perf bits (excluding power commander). . . trouble is stopping yourself from tweaking your original model & wanting to bring it up to spec of 'better' variants (i know, it will never on paper be the same but i'm pretty sure you could spend a lot less than 5-7k+ that appears to be the going rate for a lot of the more exclusive versions these days....

I also ask myself if its largely prestige of owning the brc or rwb (what do rwb acronym stand for by the way - i'm not familiar with this ref to the boxer cups) as while i appreciate @boxerscots's comments re 'inexpensive make-over', as i see it, there's not a lot of expense about the make-over (again excluding paintwork) to bring it up to the spec of these bikes (ok, i'm also assuming your prepared to accept the FG bellypan, even the carbon rocker covers don't set you back a huge amount unless your going for full original). AND even if you bring all the bits & pieces together you still need to bring in the 3rd party elements such as lennies duct/rocket; gs-tubes (maybe), free-flow air filter, good shocks etc which in theory make the bikes just as good if not better than the 'exclusive' variant.

Anyhow, the primary point of my message is really about trying to identify just what changed & when (not a lot as i understand it); I'd really like to get my hands on the full spec of the variety of variants out there as while many a form infers the differences, i'm yet to put my hand on a definitive listing.

Brad

PS - with a shot like this, you can readily see why its got its exclusitivity: https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bVTDde07-XI/T3ciwks3YyI/AAAAAAAAAXo/620V0ncBSJM/s640/boxerCup_5.jpg taken from http://daviddreesen.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/bmw-r1100s-boxercup.html

RWB= re white and blue. Aye that photo, that look did it for me soon as I saw it in Allan Jeffries showroom. Simply the best variant and will always be.

Chris

Edit.

BTW when I purchased mine (RWB) it was £1k dearer than a standard r1100s. Consider the gorgeous paint scheme, cf belly pan and head covers, raised suspension, thicker/higher seat and white clock. Definitely worth the extra or the R1100s was overpriced (which I believe to be the case). A Blade, R1 could have been bought for the same price as the BCR in 2004.

Where has the time gone :?

The Boxercups are all "Boxercups" the RWB refers to the red white and blue paint scheme as opposed to the Randy Mamola ones.

As I understand it the "family tree" is a limited number of UK Boxercups (25?) were produced by BMW GB, identified by union jack belly pans, they were "created" by taking production bikes from the crates and giving them a new paint job and a laser exhaust and chip. This was to celebrate the Boxercup race series

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RYXk6ES4xI

https://www.press.bmwgroup.com/united-k ... uage=en_GB

Image

The factory liked the concept so produced a limited run (200?) of "Randy Mamola Replika" (sic) Single Spark engine bikes using the standard R1100S as the base with carbon belly pan & head covers and blue and white colour scheme, and short torque arm meaning the back end is a little taller than standard. Based on the R1100S Sport as are all the 'cups which means they get sports suspension and 5.5" width rear wheels

Image

This later became a production run with the twin spark engine.

Image

Then the colour scheme was changed to the RWB and the suspension was raised considerably to aid ground clearance when on track, the mirrors were moved from the fairing to the 'bars.

Image

All variants produce 98hp

Some R1100S's have earlier brakes, others have the EVO brakes, some have ABS some not.

All bikes are very capable but do not respond "easily" to attempts to increase performance. HTH?

The Boxercup race series became the PowerCup using the K1200R as a base

Guilty as charged..regretfully..bought by gentleman and put into storage. Also had enquiry from a NZ man who purchased a few, one from Sydney and one from Germany, that I confirmed...$2000 in freight alone from Sydney.

The last production of the 11S all came with the sports pack meaning 5.5' rear wheel and the suspension from the Mamola rep and the upgraded alternator for heated grips and power socket.

The best 11S is the one that is paid for, kept tidy and ridden regularly.
