Off to France in a week, and was thinking about stopping off in Paris on the way back to the port.
I read that bikes registered before June 2000, are banned.
My bike was first registered in April 2000
HOWEVER.
It is a Japanese import.
It wasn't registered in the UK until 2015.
Get where I'm going ?

Re: Have I found a loophole
I would say....don't mess with the French and their legislation! But....if your V5, which you'll have with you, gives the date first reg. as 2015, I'd have thought you'd be fine....what else would they base their checks on? Unless......your V5 states that the bike has been 'previously used or registered abroad', which is what parallel import bikes used to have on them (well, mine did). That might flag up some interest. Does your bike have a 2015 plate on it? Could the gendarmes or police be bothered though? So many variables! I think its only a fine if you get caught though, rather than a 'destroy that bike' response, so not the end of the world anyway.

Whatever you decide, have a great time. I love riding in France, so am a bit envious (though if I was going, I'd be avoiding Paris )
Re: Have I found a loophole
Cancel that.
I've just had a closer look at the V5
Top left.
Date of first registration: 01.04.2000
Date of registration in the UK: 01.12.2015
Would still be confusing though.

Fiat Scudo (with speedblock, pipe carrier, reversing sensors, reversing camera, tow bar, some new rust and Fake Plumber logo)
started out with nothing, still have most of it left.

Erm
Thanks for the good wishes.
We're going to a place called GAP, which is in a gorgeous area in the mountains.
Staying "AirBnB in a Farm house.
This is one of the Tour De France stages (Lacets de Montvernier) which is nearby.
Looking forward to riding up here.

I am sure that would be a fun ride up and down, more than once - but with all that traffic, would be a chore and hard work I think

I think like anywhere else, it depends what time you hit it.
I nearly always find the alps roads to be near deserted.
Summertime is of course off season in the Summer.
No snow, no skiers very little traffic.

Except this is a Tour stage so all the cyclists see if they can climb it quicker than the stage winner (forgetting the miles the peloton has done before they hit the climb) The Stelvio was heaving last year on a cold wet day with cyclists wanting the t shirt at the top (although it was still fun)

A few years ago I was in Albertville during the tour.
It was quite by chance, as I don't follow it.
It was an amazing experience.
People line the streets, and dozens of vehicles from various sponsors drive past throwing gifts out into the crowd before the riders come through.
There is a real carnival atmosphere.

It is a spectacle - I was a really keen cyclist and worked in the mountains in Southern Germany and my boss was best mates with Didi Thurau who held the yellow jersey in one of the Tours for quite a while.
The drugs scandal put me off following it so seriously. Long before the TVM debacle - read "A Rough Ride" by Paul Kimmage published in 1990 - nothing really new but he, according to the French, "spat in the soup".
I think Lance Armstrong was made a scapegoat because they had to clean up their act
