A rare talent and a nice guy as well, have helped him out of a few gravel traps/barrier fencing etc, never stroppy like some and always had a chat if we met in the paddock later. As mentioned in the article don’t think he had as much support as he deserved/needed on the short circuits.

Lucky enough to meet the man and got his book signed by him just 2 weeks before his untimely demise. A lost talent for sure

Thanks for posting this Al, someone who died too soon. Private helicopters are dangerous things.

Yeah - but compared to the TT - probably a lot safer.

Watched some on-bike footage from TT (the 750 class) and the footage from Hislop’s bike was streets ahead of the other top riders - for smoothness, while still posting record lap times.

Ranks alongside Joey for being unassuming (and the opposite of Micky D and Fogarty)

Spent a night in the hotel bar at the Manx GP with some mates, one of whom knew Steve Hislop.
Hissy walked in and came over to chat with us as he knew one of us and he was really normal and not "affected" by his fame / ability.

One of the other residents (a racer) had come off in practice and broken both arms which were both in plaster casts.
But he was laughing and being waited on and fed his food and beer by two girls who were all over him.

Hissy just said "all the racers in this room just want to be as quick as I am around here, and all I want is to have as much personality with the girls as that bloke over there - I'm just too shy".

Well that was surprising and a bit deep for the amount of beer we had drunk, but it was a fair mesure of the man and I've never forgotten it.

The museum at Hawick has a room dedicated to Steve Hislop and another to Jimmy Guthrie. Well worth a visit and the roads up there are cracking.
