R1200s Service Help

Postby Luke2184 » Sat Apr 11, 2020 8:33 am

Trixters, I’m looking to take my 1200s out of the shed, it’s been stood 12 months. I want to bleed all the brakes & abs unit, but the Haynes manual says it must go to the dealer?? Is this true?
Any help on this matter would be appreciated

Luke

I don't have a 1200s but found this thread , it seems to imply that if changing the fluid without introducing air to the system it can done without special tools . If air has been introduced to the system you need special tools eg GS 911 to pulse the system via the abs module because air bubbles can stick to the internals of brake pipes.

From the above thread

A mixture of facts here.
The newer abs system does not require any special tools or complicated prodedure to change the fluid.

The diagnostic (bleed) test doesn't test for diagnostic codes. It modulates (i.e. pulses) the abs unit VERY rapidly which allows it to gauge whether there is air entrained in the system.

If its just been a 'normal' fluid change, there won't be so all is well.

If air has been allowed into the system as per the last comment above, then problems can arise in shifting the air bubbles. That is why the diagnostics are needed - not to test for codes, but to pulse the unit and purge the air out of the system.

The GS911 is able to perform this function

I have done it a few times without a problem as long as no air enters the system. Changed the calipers twice with no ill effects. I don't think the fluid in the ABS unit is changed unless you have the bike running and have cleared the brake fault indicator although the amount in there is not too detrimental if its not changed. It will mix with the new fluid when running normally. Just keep an eye on the reservoir when bleeding.
