I have a Tanklock bag (EA117) and much to my surprise when it arrived there was a long strap at the front for underneath the headstock....which seems a little to defeat the point!

Anyone with experience of using the tanklock system and its security - I'd really like to be able to remove the strap from the bag if possible.

I have the smallest of the tank bags with the shoulder strap with Q/R clips to the bag.

I always pass it under the centre of the bars, and back to the clip on the bag - for security, as it takes very little to release the red lock-ring.

That said- it has never been required.

I agree with Al - I have a small Givi tank lock bag and it seems over time the release ring doesn't need much persuasion to release although it hasn't happened to me either but as I use it solely for keeping cards, wallet, compact camera etc, I think it's a wise thing to do

I used to think the same, until somebody else recommended cutting the strap off, since the bag would impede your ability to steer in the event the tank ring failed. Seemed a sensible observation, so I cut the straps off mine too. No problems since and less faff fitting and removing the bag(s).

That is a valid point!

Thinking about it, I might see if a small locking pin could be fitted to the release lever.

What I don't want, is my wallet, tickets, phone and passport flying down the autoroute with me at 80mph.

Will see how much freedom it has, should it come off its mount.

I don't think those mounts are heavy duty, so I only use it for the small case, and limit its weight.

I've got a big one, the XS307

It doesn't have a strap (I don't think)

I like how it fits as it doesn't touch any bodywork, very good design, I've tried to pull it off and its very secure

So no one has had the tank mount fail?

I like Paul's point re: if the tank lock mount did fail with it strapped up then what would that do the steering with a single strap fitted?

Also noted that all the bags have a 2kg limit! ...... then again so did the renthall rack I used to have and I know how much stuff I loaded on that when toruing, though I suspect that was far more pessimistic than the Tanklock limit.

I think I might just get some scissors out!

Peter, I had a good look at the SW Motech bags at Motorrad days last year and one of the guys on the tour bought one. We fitted it before we headed bag and I was impressed. Was a bit more expensive than the Givi equivalent but it seemed to have a more "positive" attachment

In some ways I wish I had gone down the SW Motech route, though as Dave says they are more expensive and there are now 3 different SW Motech tank mount standards - ION, EVO and PRO!

I have nothing positive to say about the Givi tank ring whatsoever. I like my BMW tank bag and strap system though.

Worth every penny.

Like Chris I went down a different route.
I bought 3 sizes of Bagster tank bags years ago (in the '80's when I first had a VFR 750 Honda) and I just changed the tank cover with each new bike I bought. Last one was £30 universal one for the F800 ST three years ago and the bags themselves are all still going strong.
No possibility of breaking loose because they each have the same four hold down clips onto the tank cover.
