To catch a mouse (not bike related)

Having just watched a mouse scuttling across the office floor, any good tips on catching the buggers.

I've tried the mechanical traps with cheese/chocolate and pumpkin seeds (these are East London rodents) with no success before.
We have a westie who is hopeless at catching anything except for his claws in jumpers, other people's kites, footballs, sheep etc.
The wife hates cats.

Little beggar is probably/hopefully nesting in the accounts files.

Advice appreciated.

go for the cat, if the wife doesn`t like it she could go along with the mouse you can`t lose.

I used to have them from time to time in my garage. Tried various traps with varying degrees of success. The best thing I have come across is an ultrasonic gizmo which plugs into an available socket. The mice hate the sound but humans can't hear it. Have had no mice for two years now. I got it from B&Q for about a tenner. It's called an STV717 mouse and rat repeller.

Cheese, chocolate pumpkin seeds!!! What sort of sophisticated middle class mouse are you trying to catch? For your East London mouse I think you need 3 day old kebab with a bit of Jamaican Gold sprinkled in. Never fails.

Here in Surrey it would be anything from M&S food range (organic of course).

PS Cats are useless. More likely to ignore your mouse because it can't be arsed but leave half dead baby birds in your slippers! Plus it will always look at you as if you are the lowest form of life.

I can speak from both expertise and experience about pest control! For mice, non-poison options: the breakback trap 'little nipper' is the best, baited with Kit-Kat or choc digestive. Skill needed to locate the trap, set to a whisper of release, with the treadle at right angles to the mouse run, usually the edge of the wall. The bait must be small and secure. There are other, more extreme methods, only suitable for use in the Ritz et al when a new infest floods the venue. Happens!
The ultrasonic device mentioned by CCmac only works for a short time, the mice get hardened to it, especially if they're hungry.
The greatest tool I recommend is an electronic device from Australia. It repels rats, mice and cockroaches. This does work and I have seen terrible infests cleared in a week and remain clear two years later. Take the device away (i.e. customer does not pay the bill) vermin are back within 24 hours. thanks oyster, will try out your tip, we had a bit of a rat problem a couple of years back (house is by a railway line), pest control put bait down and they kept crawling under the bath to die....

we had a mouse down stairs, tried a normal trap without bait jammed next to their run behind a kitchen appliance. Begger triggered the trap but escaped.... found him a week later dead under some shelves.

The only problem we have with mice, is our two cats bringing them in from outside to play with Thankfully, they prefere to finsh the birds off outside!!

My cat also brings in field mice which I then have to catch (always alive) and take back out of the house. She brings them in hanging from the scruff of the neck (the mouse that is), like a kitten. They are always alive.... hang on, said cat is currently rolling around on floor beside my computer chair, demanding to be stroked...... now where was I. Here is a piccie of Katie - doesn't look like a mouse catcher, does she?
