First gear

Hi all. Since I've had the R1200S, only a few months ago, I've always found it tricky getting it from neutral into first. It goes from second to first fine, but from neutral I often have to take several attempts, and I'm kicking down hard (soft doesn't do it either

). I think it's getting harder, and when I was moving the bike on foot today, I went to sit on it and it jumped into first of its own accord! Luckily I didn't drop it :shock:

I don't see how I could have clipped the lever...

So is it hard for others to get into first, and i should just accept it, or should I check it out?

Give this a try, with the clutch held in, push down on the gear lever with your foot (no need to stamp on it, just apply gentle pressure). Slooowly start letting the cutch at and it should slot into first nicely.
Common on the 1100/1150 'Rs', and may well work for your 1200.

Not had it with my 12S, but have with other bikes, in particular a Honda CB1300.
Just before you put it into gear, just give a gentle blip of the throttle.
That always worked for me.

or try moving the bike slightly as the gear is selected. One chap on here used to call it 'the Neasden shuffle'!

I've always used that method.

Henceforth I shall remember it is the neasden shuffle.

I had that problem with two of my 1150`s but not with the 1100!
I put it down to clutch drag or gear oil? :roll:

Happened to me once, turned out to be a piece of gravel stuck on top of the gearbox which stopped the lever going right down. Could change down on the move in other gears, just 1st was difficult, must be a bit extra travel to select.

Thanks all, I do sometimes give it a little blip and that helps. It's good to hear it happens on other bikes, hopefully it's just something I have to get used to rather than a problem, hopefully no gravel stuck!

Went to get on my bike last night and noticed scratch on cylinder head cover, grrrr, not parking next to cyclists anymore. :evil:
