Oil consumption

Postby ejhuckuran » Thu Jul 21, 2005 7:38 am

I wonder if I can get some advice. My 2001 S has just passed the 10,500 mile mark and is developing a mild oil habit. From other posts, I was expecting oil consumption to fall at this point.

Noticed a blue cloud on start up one morning - but not a regular occurrence.

Top it up with Castrol (Vines recommended).

I do a daily commute across SW London, so not great riding, with the odd run out of town on a weekend and an annual track day outing.

Thanks

Which Castrol are you using? I think that BMW recommend Castrol GP up to 10k and then GPS after that up to around 60k and I can't remember what thsy recommend after that.

Checked last night, I am using Castrol GPS - I'll carry on with it then.

Thanks

Fumes at start up and oil consumption 1 liter to 3000 km's. That's what mine does, and always (110.000 km's) has done. I don't have a centerstand and I've once been told that parking on the side stand does cause this oil fume at start up after a park. Hell I don't exactly know what oil I'm using: any decent brand, synthetic, 10W40 (think its Shell or Castrol or something else :? ).

Wouldn't worry 'bout it too much.

I was told to always turn the engine off then leaving it for a second BEFORE putting it on the side stand too so as little oil as poss sits against the rings. Works for me! Still consumes BIG LOTS on the move though.

Wot jason said, but get some cheap 10w40 and keep topping up with that. Took my bike to 130K area before it was tombstoned, would have gone further if some red car didn't want it as decoration.
When can the Highway agency lay softer road coverings??

Now rides a mangled wreck... Ho Hum back to the K100
