Splitting brake calipers

Postby SAS Tom » Tue Apr 16, 2013 3:04 pm

Need a bit of help...

I split the calipers on my 11S to get them powder coated as they had seen better days. Got it all done and put them back together but have a leak between the calipers. Only now did I think it a good idea to google splitting calipers which brings up the answer of don't split them at all costs. Then others saying that they have done and they were fine.

So has anyone here done it and did they go back together ok? I think it could be the o rings in the middle, does anyone know where I can get new ones?

Maybe if you find your local Brembo specialists they would have suitable o rings. Possibly any brake specialists I guess

Just had mine done by Jap and German and they are fine. Perhaps worth giving them a call for some advice

I've been there.

For whatever reason, the O-rings in the rebuild kits are too thin, which causes leaks.

You need to buy some thicker ones, but be careful to get the correct material.

Cheers

I've recently rebuilt a pair of calipers and found the chaps at

www.powerhouseautomotive.co.uk

very helpful. They sorted out the caliper-half seals by diameter and thickness, as well as the piston seals. The guy I spoke to was Lawson Smith. Recommended.

Hi mark

Which calipers were those? Mine are the early non abs brembos. If yours are, do you have the measurements for the half seals?

I have split and refurbished Brembo calipers albeit not for a 1100s. I bought a service kit from Sherlocks,, i used compressed air to pop the pistons, all in all pretty easy. As has been said make sure the o rigs are sat correctly and torque up to spec.

My calipers were the ABS Tokico ones, so the actual dimensions probably won't cross over.
I measured the recesses in the caliper body and gave the dimensions to the powerhouse chaps who matched them up from their range. The options they suggested were:-
11.0-11.5mm diameter and 2.0-2.2mm thick
10.0mm diameter and 3mm thick.

Mine turned out to be the 11mm ones. They also supplied the piston seals, Cu washers, stainless bleed nipples and the nipple covers.
