R1100S - Fitting pannier rails.

Postby kpw894 » Thu May 02, 2013 9:41 pm

Does the heat shield remain in place when the n/s pannier rail is attached, not quite sure whether it stays or not?

Don't think it does Chris - I posted earlier that it doesn't - need to check installation instructions

I couldn't get it to fit without modification. The lower part of the shield would not sit far enough back to line up with the mounting hole in the pannier rail. Luckily, I had a spare heat shield so I slotted the lower fixing. I also had to move the rivet holding the heat shield to the backing plate as the head of the rivet made the situation worse. It's all in place and secure but I am curious to know whether it should stay or not as I can't see why the heat shield is not required just because panniers are fitted ..not very 'BMW'. The other thing I'd considered was to wrap that 6 - 8 inches of exhaust with a thermal wrap (I've got some laying around).

Thanks for the replies guys....

Kieron.

Have a look in the GIVI top box thread in this section, but basically take off rear plastics (carefully) and position rails along subframe and all will bacome a bit clearer, I have fitted mine with the stickers(if still visible) on the rails facing out, and the rack looks better if the big silver thingy is painted black. althouth i will prob do it silver to match bike.

If you are referring to BMW (not GIVI) side mounting rails for their panniers I don't think you have to take any of the plastics off. I've just fitted mine and I didn't, it is fairly obvious where/how they fit. The only thing I struggled with is whether the small heat shield stays fitted. Mine wouldn't go back on without modification and this will be obvious when you offer up the n/s rail.

Let me know if you need any help.

Thanks very much. The bit i strugle with is the piece right at back my grab rail. You remove two small screws at back which have like little hook and fit the rack there. Whats the thing on back u remove for. Whats its purpose
