Frame paint... DIY or powder coat?

Looking get the frame painted on the R100 over the winter.

It's mostly ok, but some bits have lifted and gone a bit rusty. I know powder coating is the best option, but I bought the bike to spend time doing it up myself.

Question is, how can I best DIY the frame paint?

I've got a dry, empty out building that I can heat up with a space heater and use as a good space for painting.

I was thinking that I could clean and sand the whole frame down, take the rusty bits down to metal and clean up, then prime the entire frame and paint (3/4 coats of each with a day between).

Do you think its worth doing?

Also, any recommendations on paints/primers to use?

Any other general painting advise would be apreciated too.

To be honest Steve if you're going to the effort of complete teardown I'd only consider powder coating as it's much tougher than a simple respray ever would be

I think I disagree there. Too many fixing points on the frame for powdercoat Good paint baked on will be plenty for a frame IMHO.

If you think you can do it justice, then no doubt a satisfying job. Powder coating as Steve says, will give a good durable finish.

You are not a million miles from Triple s in Bingley who are highly recommended. I have not used them myself, but they are highly regarded in classic jap circles.

Wow! Thanks Herb. I think at £120 ish for a frame and swing arm, it's maybe not worth doing myself... I was thinking £250ish would be the going rate for a prep and powder coat.

Tell them it's an R90 and it's a tender less. Haha.

Leave it to professionals If those Triple s prices are correct , the paint alone would cost that..

I've used triple S to do a few bits of mine and they do an excellent job. They do a better job than I could ever do. It was actually cheaper for them to coat the calipers I had done than to buy a tin of paint!

i can vouch for them - i had my rear spring done after the ohlins paint started to chip & flake. two years later its still perfect
