Hi all
A few pics to show extent of engine damage sustained by a RHS valve failure. Bike is stripped down to fit new engine.

OUCH!

On the upside - you will enjoy rebuilding the engine (apart from cost), and you have a good, well-lit garage to do it in.

Look forward to seeing the progress.

Fucking hell!
Do you race that bike? Did the valve let go whilst you were flat out?

I do enjoy the spanner work, although it's a bit of a pain as everything bolts to the engine case. I,m in the process of repainting the new engine before I fit it and then I can strip and rebuild it. The garage is getting there, still need to sort out bits, but it beats working out on the street.

Hi
Yes . It let go flat out in 4th up horsepower hill in Brno. I was revving and shifting at 7500 rpm for the majority of the race as it was very hot and the engines get a hard time. I was dicing for a podium position in my class on the last lap and didn't want to give the other guy a advantage. So stretched it a little bit more

Bike didn't seize. If it had I would have been on my arse .Dropped valve (s) , smashed into piston . Piston broke up and debris got flung around crankcase . So much damage caused in so little time!!!

Shifting well below the redline? Surprised and worried it dropped a valve.

how easy was it to get hold of another r1200s engine?

35+ ambient temp , 2 days of practice and racing, not always shifting at below the redline and the last bit of my post. The bike got a good caning, lije it never would on the road.
I wouldnt worry.

You building to road spec Gus?
Or putting in trick parts?
Anything to be gained in a race by having a higher rpm with a boxer engine?
So much grunt low down, i tend to short shift most times and rarely explore the red line area. This is on the road i should add.
Best of luck getting it back on the track.

Hi Neil
Trick parts going in. Not really for any major power increase , but to reduce stress on the engine. Should also let the engine rev quicker.Modified oil pump for improved lubrication and cooling circuits.

Higher RPM limit may also allow you to hold onto a gear longer depending on gearing, so saving a gearshift which could cost you time. Also allows a little more room for rider/operator error
All the best

Boy Gus, that's really ugly! Sorry to see this, but's that's racing......had a few like that myself.

I think the only thing I would have done differently would be to have a beer on my bench instead of that water bottle!

Don't let the setback curb your enthusiasm!

Cheers
