1200 FD bearing

Postby f90x » Tue Apr 19, 2016 2:50 pm

Just at the mot and there's play. Anyone else had similar at 20k miles? Anyone fixed it themselves. Just dropped £1100 on the car and would prefer not to spend any more on vehicles this month.

So it would appear no-one here has had to fix a 12 FD. That being the case I have looked into it a bit further and unfortunately it's not really a diy job. Dealer money according to a 2013 post on the net was £500 plus. Apparently Mikeyboy from UKGSER (the proprietor of 'Overland and Classic) was doing a complete rebuild for £350 in 2013. TBH I'd rather have a 'BMW FD specialist' do it than a main dealer so it looks like that's the way forward. Very surprised at 20k miles though. Most replacements I've found on the net are between 40-60k. All GS bikes.

how much is the play - is any play acceptable at all? I would have thought it would be noisy or leaking if there is excessive play - is there any of those symptoms? Never really checked mine - not sure if i dare now - mine has 18k on it. There has been a full final drive on ebay in the last month or so - think it was about £200 so it might be an issue if its still on

Cheers Ted. Unfortunately the disc carrier is missing. By the time Ive taken mine somewhere to have my carrier pulled off and then pressed on the replacement FD I'd have been better off rebuilding mine with all new parts. Nice thought on the surface though.

Lots of GS's on ADVRider with blown final drives.

Are you sure it's the final drive bearing and not a loose wheel/wheel flange??

Did you have the recall done on the wheel flange?

Cheers

TBH I haven't had time to pull it apart and have a proper look yet. I shall on Saturday. I had planned to take it in for the recall in the next couple of weeks anyway but this potentially makes it awkward as the carrier/flange has to come off if it's cracked in order for it to be replaced but it also has to come off if it needs a new bearing. I don't want BMW to do the new bearing; I'd rather the 'specialist' do it (and it's cheaper). I had a look last year when I changed the fd oil and greased the splines and there wasn't anything obvious along the lines of the cracks like i've seen in the photo's posted online. Also there was no movement at the beginning of the year when it had it's last MOT. I have however ripped through France for 3k miles since then, so who knows...

I'm not sure the flange problem would make the wheel move in the diagonal as it currently does as the flange/disc moves with the wheel which would suggest that it is all connected together as it should be. I know that it's an inevitable failure but 20k does seem a bit early.
