Nah, the level should settle once the seals have blown, although you'll need to top it up now and then.

There's still an air gap above the filler hole.

Yes. Too much is just as much a problem (albeit a different one) as too little.

Definitely no bits in the old old oil, and yes, that's just how I'd describe what came out of mine - some good-as-new looking stuff, some a murky mess! My syringe only does 20ml at a time....I have to count all the way up to 9! I'll do what you suggested - off to Spain in May, so could do with that 'peace of mind' feeling before then! :)

FWIW I put 190 in and I use this. Takes a while mind.

Yes you should my ST had the oil changed by the non BMW dealer I bought it from and they had done this - result oil leaking from the big oil seal seal on the rear wheel (r/h side behind the plastic trim- (these bevel boxes have no breather so rely on airspace to take up expansion due to heat - too much oil = less air space - which mean pressure which means leakage) I drained and refilled with 180 MLS - equals no more leaking - I have done over 35 k miles with only 180 MLS each oil change without any issue. 200 MLS is from "dry" - when you drain you do not get "dry" hence 180 MLS and this explains how you get streaking in the oil ie new oil and old oil residue .
There would appear to be a surfeit of prolixity and sesquipedalian content today please do not use a big word when a singularly un-loquacious and diminutive linguistic expression will satisfactorily accomplish the contemporary necessity

Makes perfect sense, mine had been stripped, bearings replaced and cleaned. The 200ml would take this into account.

Well I dropped it into a measuring jug and out came 300mls. I'd done one ride of about 100 miles on it. The Haynes manual states 230 mls and the BMW manual, 250 Mls or up to the bottom of the threads on the filler hole in a rebuild. I've put somewhere in the middle of these. :alien:

I fitted my completely empty used FD the night before I left for France and put 190 in it. Just under 3000 miles later I returned home with (fortunately) no leaks, seizures or other catastrophic problems. I hadn't considered the 'totally empty' scenario so perhaps should have squirted a bit more in. Still I'm only 10mm under Mikes recommendation so I should be OK.

So it's 180 ml for the R1200S. But the R1100S is......?

Is this thread not about the 1200 series bevel box ? I've always filled my 11S bevel box to the btm of filler threads , never been a problem for me . The attached photo is the 1100 afaik.

I thought it was a general post about FD's but no it's 1200s. But I'd just done my 1100 oil and got confused over the level.

Like nab301 I used to fill my 1100S up to the bottom of the filler threads.
