Annoying ABS problem

Postby fontana » Wed Jan 18, 2017 10:27 pm

Hoping you guys can shed some light on this because my BMW is a bit perplexed by it.
My bikes an 1100RS but it'll have the same generation ABS as used in your bikes prior to the R1200S.
When I turn on my ignition, the abs lights blink in unison as they should, but as soon as I press the starter and the engine is running, they blink alternately, and continue to do so on the move, meaning fault.
If I run the bike for a minute or so, pull over and switch the ignition off and back on again, everything is fine on start up.
Lights continue to blink in unison after engine is switched on, and go off once on the move.
Then as soon as I stop for any length of time, even five minutes, it starts all over again.
I've had the system checked by my BMW dealer, who told me that no faults are showing up,
So any idea's.

on earlier bikes it's usually linked to low battery, I had an 1150GS that would do it.

If you look here

http://www.largiader.com/abs/absfault.html

and get to the fault code 5 bit it has a link to a modification that can be made so the abs is checked after start up

ISTR I cured mine by installing an Odyssey PC680

Also, as daft as it sounds, change the HT leads, as they age they don't help the starting any :)

Many thanks.
The battery was replaced by the dealer I bought it from last July, so it becomes even more annoying.
:x
It used to do it every now and then, but now it's all the time, which I suppose does lend credence to the battery problem prognosis.

I added an edit too

"Also, as daft as it sounds, change the HT leads, as they age they don't help the starting any :)"

I'm guessing the dealer installed a standard battery? The Odyssey (or Motobatts) are really in a higher class

I had this on my 11S when I purchased it . It had the incorrect battery fitted, on the S afaik it should be a 19ah. The one fitted was only 16 or 17a/h from memory.
