Cluster fu@ked

Postby ZenSchool » Tue Mar 07, 2017 2:16 pm

Hello again boxer people.
I've got another problem with my R1200S, which I need your help and advice with.
My instrument cluster seems to have lost power.
It's intermittent to start with but now, it seems, more off than on.
When it is off, all that works is the clock (time), the mileometer and the reserve fuel mileage range.
When it is off, I lose the speedo; the rev counter; neutral light; all tell-tale lights; gear indicator; trip 1 and 2 counter and; instrument illumination lights.
Does this seen like a common problem? An easy fix? Or is my bike having a mental breakdown?
Please help. Your knowledge and advice will be very much appreciated.
Regards
Keith.
P.s. the engine still starts, runs and everything else on the bike works normally. The neutral light seems to stay on until after the engine starts. Not sure if the engine would start if the neutral light went out before I hit the start button.

Caveat #1: I have never owned an R1200S, but many people, myself included, have had similar issues on the R1100S

On the R1100S, the fuse boxes and wires cable tied to the front sub frame have a bad habit of insulation on the wiring wearing through where it's cable tied to the front sub frame, or the wires at the fuse box connections failing. on your R1200S, I'd try hunting around the fuse box first of all, unplugging and checking the fuses first then checking the wiring to the fuse holders second, and if that all looks sound, follow the wiring up to the instrument cluster looking for signs if the insulation wearing through.

Good luck!

Paul
You really need only two tools: WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the tape.

As above , not the problem you have but an old thread about broken and worn / frayed wiring insulation behind the left hand panel.

Not strictly true, it has "electronic fuses" that reset themselves if tripped after an ignition restart.
But no fuse box as such.

But that would explain the initial intermittent problem, if there is now a permanent short caused by wire chaffing that would make sense?
