Wider rear wheel for R1200S

Postby Stanley » Thu May 04, 2017 10:48 am

I'd like to get the wider rear wheel (6") for my R1200S.
Do I have to get the original one, or will others fit?

The K1200 wheels look similar, but direction of build is the other way around... ie. the spokes would curve forward rather than rearward.

Anyone want to sell one?

I think you'll find that the bike may feel nimbler with the narrower wheel.I have the wide wheel and when I changed for a 55 tyre it felt like it had shed 20kgs. Don't know if it's related but could be.

Hi
Yes a narrower tyre will make the bike turn in better. On my GSXR I have a 185 instead of the 195 width and it does make a difference, so putting a wider tyre or wheel on will make it turn slower in to the bends.

If you only want the 6" rim and 190 section tyre for the looks (and it will turn more slowly with the wide rim) you could try a different brand of tyre, I've been running Michelin Pilot Roads 2,3 & 4 since I bought my 12s some 9 years ago and I've just fitted Dunlop Roadsmart 3, it feels very good but too early for a proper evaluation, but the rear certainly looks a lot wider than the Michelin so :D all round from me
Phil.

R1200S and loving it !

Thanks Phil,
I've got the RS3's on my R1200S. They're great! I've gone through 2 pairs of them on my GSA too.
I was considering the wider rear wheel to gain a greater contact patch. I would run a higher profile rear tyre also, as I run out of clearance too quickly on track days, and wish to maintain its turn-in ability.
In some ways I prefer then 5" rim. It adds to the whole "shit, air cooled, narrow tyred boxer look" when I upset rice-rocket jockeys :D

Can't decide whether to stick with what I have; whether to bling it up a bit; or whether to find the cash and start with an HP2 Sport. Really like the R1200S though... super-bike :D
