R1100S 1999 Exhaust cans removal

Postby JayDee1942 » Wed Jun 28, 2017 1:32 pm

This bike is fitted with a de-cat pipe with a nice large hole rusted thru it!
I have obtained a decent cat and wish to fit it.
I have released both flange assemblies to the two down pipes and the upper clamp bolt assembly.
I have removed the rear numberplate assembly and removed the seat.

Under the seat Im presented with a large plastic tray with tools etc and a puncture repair kit. but no sign of the exhaust cans.
Various info states that the cans slid rearward off a couple of pegs.

Question: Does all that plastic need to be removed to gain access to the cans?
Question: How do the cans clear the plastic end assenbly that appears to block the cans in place?

Any help would be appreciated Im jdavie7@yahoo.co.uk

Regards to all................. JayDee

Once youve released the clamp from the link pipe to the cans, they will come off from the rear but might need a good few whacks with a hammer to get em off

You need rear side panels removed as well, if you haven't already done so, and a spray of wd40 or similar where the cans hang on the mounts under the seat to help them "unstick". Someone said they slackened off the rear subframe to allow a bit more room.
In your situation I think I would have found a good fabricator and had my y piece repaired rather than put several kilo's of restrictive cat back on.

The only plastic I've ever removed before removing the end cans is the rear number plate hanger . There should be room to slide the (rubber insert) hangers on top of the cans off their pins .

Its 'Job - Jobb'ed!
Remember folks this is a 1999 model. My mate, the previous owner, would have had the standard servicing done, but NIL general maintenence, ie cleaning, oiling, polish etc.
It took me two days of concentrated cleaning just to discover the motorcycle under all the rubbish.
It would have had the exhaust done in its very early days (cat bypass pipe). Since then it has probably done 130K hard miles through summer and winter, with never a wash.

As it was virtually all of the rear end plastic and mouldings had to come off until the pegs and rubbers were open for inspection.
A thin rod was used to slip twixt the rubber and peg then WD40 applied - 1/2 a dozen goes and both rubbers had de-bonded from the pegs and the cans were pulled free. The only sign of 'coppaslip' grease was on the cans to pipe slip joint (Hooray!).
Another point, what a super design feature, a really simple fixing

Just a point here - 'Coppaslip' grease is the fettlers friend, always clean and grease with it prior to reassembly. When you come back to that fastner 10 years later - Bingo! it will undo rather than sheer!

Thanks for all the responses - most welcome! ................... JayDee

By the by - the weight difference twixt Cat and pipe and De-cat pipe is 2.5 lbs ( or in non-christian units - 1 kilo) Or it is with the items I have!
