2001 1100S SPEEDO SYSTEM - HOW DOES IT WORK?

Postby Hay Ewe^ » Mon Jul 17, 2017 11:19 am

Evening all

I have been trying to figure out how the system works.
Unlike my GS there is no cable drive from the front wheel.
My Clymer manual and searching Boxertrix tends to explain that that there is a caselated ring in the final drive, but my bike doesnt have that. It has an ABS ring and sensor how ever.

The wiring manuals in the Clymer show a circuit from the speedo dial to the sensor but that is all.

Please can I have some guidance

thanks

There is a sensor in the top of the final drive, a black plastic thing with a wire of fit held in place with a small cap head machine screw.

So it uses the abs system to calculate the speed?

There is a post on here somewhere... but I can't find it. My '99 abs has ( had ) two sensors, one horizontal for the abs and one vertical for the speedo which pointed at a separate castle ring within the final drive.
The '01 bike you have probably has evo2 brakes with servos and therefore only has the abs sensor to do both jobs.

Thank you, as I expected but needed confirmation.

No. Otherwise how would non ABS bikes speedo work

The speedo sensor is inside the final drive case.

Threads here and on other forums about removal of iabs and subsequent failure of speedometer. It's linked in with the abs electronics , way over my head
