Funny noise , now oily rear tyre

Postby GerryB » Thu Mar 14, 2019 6:29 pm

Today I was buzzing along at about 50 mph , suddenly it felt like i'd ridden over a Catz eye with rear wheel, nothing else.

I stopped about 5 km later.

After the meeting , came out and noticed a bit of oil on ground ?????

Checked and wondered if that was linked to the bump Id felt earlier .

Any way , I started and rode off , taking it real easy, rode 6km home at snail pace, stopped about half way and noticed a fair bit of oil had come out.

So the bike is now parked in the garage.

Any advice on what it may be ? Just racked up 57 thousand miles .

I'm guessing rear wheel bearing has failed may be ?

Obviously riding slowly , every noise and vibration is magnified a million times , and I'm thinking is there a noise, is there vibration ???

Drain the bevel box oil looking for swarf ( check oil level before you drain it) . Rear wheel off the ground, grab it top and bottom to check for play. Remove the rear wheel to check if oil is leaking from the large seal behind it . if it is leaking, removing the seal will probably expose missing / loose rivets in the bearing cage. There was a great write up in the thread below by Steptoe but the photos are no longer available. If the oil is leaking from the rubber gaiter between bevel and swing arm it could be the gearbox output seal , the oil travels down the inside of the swing arm . Lastly it could be the input seal and bearing on the bevel box . I had this bearing become very rough on a highish mileage bevel although it didn't leak oil.
All fixes are relatively expensive if paying professionals..
