Numpty question

Postby Al » Thu Feb 02, 2006 5:23 pm

Just recieved new Abba stand, out to garage to play and it works just needs a bit of bending to miss sidestand. Decided to start bike on stand, question is how stiff is back wheel supposed to be to turn by hand and is it supposed to sound like bag of rocks going round in a washing machine when running in gear on the stand(sorry two questions)? Its a job to tell if its still noisy if you open the throttle as my exhaust is a bit loud. I did say it was possibly a bit numptyish!!!!

Hi
It sounds like the rear drive is making the noise.Caused by it not sitting(both wheels on the floor and you sat on it)as is should. The rear drive needs to be at the correct angle for it to run smoothly.Having it up on a stand allows the rear to hang down.

What Gus said, plus the firing pulses from the motor will be giving the diff and its bearings a bit of a battering, with no driving load being put though the wheel.

Must admit, I wouldn't recommend doing this for long!

numpty question

Postby Al » Thu Feb 02, 2006 8:04 pm

Cheers guy`s that makes sense, that just leaves the stiffness issue. As I am new to bmw and shafts etc the rear wheel seems really stiff compared to a chain. I checked the rear brake and that is not binding.

Both the above, no load means that it'll rattle liek a good un. As for the wheel being stiff to turn by hand, it should rotate freely with a bit of effort ( in neutral anyway ....I thankyu :? ) so if it's really stiff I'd first of all check for sticking brakes, then start checking bearings.

HTH, and don't worry about asking what you might think are "numpty" questions, chances are someone else has already asked it or is wondering the same thing, and if you don't ask how you meant to learn !

Hi
There will be quite a bit of resistance as the rear diff has gears which mesh together at right angles all bathed in treacle like 90 grade diff oil. Also you have a large shaft(phooor!)drive going through 2 UJ,s and a gearbox at the other end.
As long as your brakes aint binding, then i wouldnt worry.

Al, are you talking 'bout bending your sidestand

with the abba stand, you first attach the right hand side, then offer the left side up, then lift the bike upright, tha abba stand will kick up your sidestand as you raise it with the lever on to the stand.

I was going to bend the support pieces on the stand out slightly, I thought, as you say they were supposed to flick the sidestand up as you lever the bike up, but when I do it the support piece hits the stand but not at the right angle to retract it. if I bend them out slightly (about 15mm) it will miss the sidestand altogether, at least then I wont forget to put it down again when dropping bike off the abba. :?
