R1100S Brake Question

Hi Everyone, I just joined the forum as I'm looking to buy an R1100S to upgrade from my R80RS.

I would be interested to know if any models were ever fitted with servo assisted Evo brakes. I don't like these brakes since they have a habit of failing due to an electrical fault, which costs $1000s to fix, a problem I have seen with R1150RTs with the linked brakes. I have a feeling that the 1100S may have been fitted with Evo front calipers but not the whole system, can anybody confirm this?

It's all probably academic tho as I'm looking mainly at early 98-99 models which were fitted with normal brakes with ABS as an option.

Welcome Anto, From my own experience, the bikes without abs, with the calipers badged as bmw, but badged on the inside as brembo, seem to be the ones to go for, as I understand it, the earlier ones were badged brembo, then there were the bmw badged brembos, then the later tokiko one's, which seem to have the most probs, esp with abs.

Cheers for the info. The early ones I've looked at have been non ABS models so I'll probably be fine. Any other particular problems to look out for on these bikes?

Anto:

1999-2000: 310mm rotors with Brembo marked calipers with 2 circles have either no ABS or ABS2 without brake assist.
2001-2005: 320mm rotors have EVO brakes. The non-ABS has no power assist, the ABS versions have integral ABS with power assist. The non-ABS versions have BMW marked calipers with Brembo on the backside, the ABS versions have BMW marked calipers with Tokico on the backside.

If you do not want power assisted brakes, look for the early models with ABS2 if you want ABS, or bikes without ABS.

As far as failing is concerned, that is highly exaggerated. Typical internet hype. Actual failings have been few and far between, but like all things on the internet any that does fail gets blown up to huge proportions.

Thanks for the info. I am only really concerned about the brakes failing as it happened on my fathers R1150RT whilst we were riding through some high speed twisties. He wasn't particularly impressed. :lol:

And even the (Non-ABS) BMW branded Brembos seize at 80mph on damp roads after a winters riding ... :shock:

That probably won't be a problem for me over here, where winter involves being slightly cold but not much else. :D
