mystery cut out

Postby bloggy » Wed Apr 02, 2008 7:01 pm

yesterday morning riding through london the bike suddenly cut out - when i hit the starter button it turned over but wouldn't start. after about a minute it started again as if nothing had happened and ran fine. all was well until my journey home tonight when the same thing happened about 5 times coming through london. when i hit the motorway all was well, when i came off the motorway and into town the same thing happened again.

any ideas on what may be causing this much appreciated

cheers

Give us a bit more info mate, year of bike, single or twin spark, mileage, any mods? How long you had it, serviced regularly?

it's 2001 R1100SS single spark with remus y piece - regularly serviced - 25,000 miles - oil, spark plugs, oil filter and air filter changed in the last 1000 miles, valves adjusted last week. the only thing i haven't had seen to is the fuel filter - could this possibly be the cause?

cheers

Sounds like bad wiring. Check bundle under ignition switch and favourite chafe point under left fairing panel alongside relay/fuse box.

As Oyster says go for wiring first, but possibly 7 years on same fuel filter??
Id do that anyway, when I did mine couldnt believe the amount of watery crap in the bottom of the fuel tank.

Mine broke a wire on the underside of the ignition barrel so have a quick look under there.
If fuel filter is blocked, you'll notice holding back on extended high speed runs.

I would say it sounds like a fuel issue. I presume you were only at low revs each time it cut out. As Tim says, if it has never had it's fuel filter changed in 7 years, you should do it.

I remember on one of my old BM's, the fuel filter had developed a hairline crack in the casing, but that had the effect of increasing the tickover.

sidestand switch? (sidestand waggles about when you go over bumps)
'Hinterachsge' translates as 'rear axle'.(Not 'Differential', so f*** off)

Might be worth checking and cleaning the plug and socket that connects the fuel pump to the loom under the tank.

Mine refused to fire up (even though it was cranking over OK) one evening after work, so I took it apart and cleaned it up, and it's been fine ever since.

I'm with Bailey - mine has done this... twice. When it won't start, check the front sidelight and the rear light - mine were going out and the fault was the wiring to/from the ignition barrel. Twist the steering right round or wiggle the ignition wire from the barrel.

cut out

Postby LT » Wed Apr 09, 2008 11:52 pm

My friends 04 boxer cup was cutting out once and awhile. After ruling out the hall sensor (10,000 miles on the bike). It ended up being the engine kill switch. Just a heads up .

Well, I still don't have a clue what caused the problem. As suggested I took off the tank panels and twisted and wiggled wires while the engine was running (including the ones under the iginition barrel) - couldn't get it to cut out. In the end I stuck a bottle of STP fuel system cleaner in the tank and the problem has never recurred - even after another 1500 miles.
