Milky Final Drive Oil in R1100s

Postby jonathanbeech » Sun Apr 08, 2018 6:47 am

Hello All,

I changed the FD and gearbox oil yesterday. The oil that came from the final drive was milky. I think that indicates that it has been contaminated with water - arghhh! Not good!

Anyone had a similar problem and identified the cause?

Thanks,

Jonathan

Never had this on my 11S but have had it on a recently purchased Guzzi ... realistically it can only be condensation or water entering via the breather ? Get it good and hot and change it a couple of times ?

Thanks for the reply Nigel. Having had a few days to think about it I agree that it can only really be one of those two things. I'm going to give it regular checks, especially after riding in the rain, and monitor if and when it changes. The breather looks OK but it seems the most likely route in for moisture to me. Did you manage to identify the cause on your Guzzi?

Not yet , it's Italian and I spent a lot of time correcting other faults... The Guzzi riders site seems to recommend (if it's a problem) extending the breather with a length of hose to a higher spot under the seat ? It'll probably become a summer ride only but i'll be monitoring it carefully with frequent oil changes.

At least it's cheap and easy for us to do super regular oil changes ......
